The Hub’s Fall 2023 Scholar in Residence is Dr. Bonni Stachowiak focusing on ChatGPT and GenAI

For the last several years the Hub has invited a scholar of teaching and learning to interact with our campus to focus on important topics in a deeper way than a single keynote or workshop. This year we are excited to announce that Dr. Bonni Stachowiak will lead several virtual campus conversations around the impact of ChatGPT and generative AI in higher education.

Bonni is the Dean of Teaching and Learning at Vanguard University where she is also a Professor of Business and Management. Teaching and learning are vital to her sense of purpose and meaning in life.

You may recognize Bonni as the creator and host of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast where she gets the privilege of speaking with exceptional educators and providing a space for discussing the art and science of facilitating learning. Since 2014, her podcast has been a space to explore how we can be more effective at facilitating learning. The Teaching in Higher Ed podcast was awarded a MERLOT Classics Award (2016) and has been profiled in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Inside Higher Ed, and EdSurge.

There is a lot of buzz around ChatGPT and generative AI in higher ed right now and Bonni has dedicated several episodes of her podcast to speaking with those who have a wide array of approaches to this technology. We are bringing her in as an expert listener and conversationalist to help all of us talk through what this complex topic means for our teaching.

Dearborn faculty and staff who support faculty (or who otherwise have interests in pedagogical topics) are invited to attend three DigPed at Dearborn learning community events where Bonni will lead us in conversation around some specific topics regarding ChatGPT and generative AI with some special guests from our campus. Internal communication with registration links will follow but if you would like to mark your calendar the dates/times are as follows:

  • Friday, Sept 15th 1pm ET with special guests from the Hub and faculty with assignment ideas.
  • Friday, Oct 20th, 1pm ET with special guests from the Dearborn student body.
  • Friday, Nov 3rd, 1pm ET for an open/reflection session.

DigPed at Dearborn is a digital teaching community at the Dearborn campus which is focused on critical perspectives, teaching with digital tools, and empowering student voices. All Dearborn faculty are welcome to attend, and there will be more internal announcements about these events in our weekly HubCaps, but you can also receive regular updates from the DigPed learning community by joining the MCommunity (link requires a UM login). This fall’s DigPed meetings will also benefit from coordination and facilitation from Dr. Maya Barak.

We know that not everyone will be able to make the meetings so we are also collecting short voice recordings from our campus community. These recordings will potentially be played during the meetings and may also be featured on a future episode of the Teaching in Higher Ed podcast. If you are part of the Dearborn community, look for internal communications about how to contribute. Members of the public can look for the podcast episode to be released in Q1 of 2024.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Bonni Stachowiak to our Dearborn campus and look forward to the rich conversations that are sure to follow.
