Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a thought-provoking panel discussion: “GenAI and Digital Media: Challenges, Approaches, and Solutions for the Classroom and Beyond” It was a great gathering of minds, each bringing unique insights to the table about artificial intelligence and education, particularly in the world of media. When it comes to GenAI spend a lot of time talking about the impact of LLMs but what about all of those image, voice, and video generators?
Jen Proctor, Adam Sekuler, and Sarah Nesbit, from our College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters, each took turns presenting and then took on some questions from the audience. I don’t want to give too much away because the video is great, but we covered how AI is impacting the media industry and how it might impact the learning of students who are hoping to someday work in these fields (journalism, film, digital design, animation, etc.). AI reducing or replacing the manual labor involved in processes like de-aging actors or fine-tuning audio are happening right now but we need to consider how to balance teaching these tools with ensuring students grasp the core concepts of storytelling, creativity, and ethics. We don’t want AI shortcuts to overshadow the importance of original thought and planning.
I’m excited to reflect on some of the highlights and to share the video recording! Big thanks to Beth Medere for doing the video captions!
If you were looking for a conversation about how AI is impacting these fields I think you will enjoy the video. Check it out!
