The Replacement of Flip (formerly Flipgrid): Enabling both Instructors and Students to Engage in Video-Centric Learning

Flip, formerly Flipgrid, a video discussion and video sharing app, announced that it has officially ended its access starting July 1, 2024. Due to restricted access and concerns over data security and privacy, the Hub is committed to seeking effective alternatives that facilitate interactive video-based learning for both instructors and students.

I have evaluated and compared various platforms and tools based on the predefined criteria, which are:

  • cost consideration,
  • data security and privacy features,
  • accessibility and support for diverse learners,
  • collaboration and interaction features,
  • integration with existing learning management systems, and
  • ease of use for both instructors and students.

It is highly recommended to utilize the free versions of Padlet and Canvas LMS in combination. One great use for Padlet is that it can be used during the first weeks of class for encouraging students to introduce themselves and build bonds with peers through interactive and engaged ways. Following this introduction stage, students can utilize the standard features of the Discussion Boards of Canvas LMS to upload video responses as part of their ongoing coursework if needed. This approach leverages Padlet’s interactive and community-building capabilities as well as the structured academic environment of Canvas LMS.

Important Notice: We don’t have an official agreement with Padlet. Therefore, you will be using the free Padlet account, which allows for up to 3 Padlet Boards at once; however, we can always archive or delete a board once it is completed to free up an open space. (Students who prefer not to accept Padlet’s terms and services should have alternative ways to earn points available.)

The combination of Padlet and Canvas LMS offer instructors powerful tools to enhance their class experience and offer students creativity and engagement to share their thoughts and feedback. Specifically, Padlet facilitates collaboration and interaction through virtual bulletin boards, fostering a sense of community as students engage in real-time discussions and project sharing. Its intuitive interface and accessible features allow the seamless integration into the class activities.

On the other hand, Canvas LMS provides robust features for online and blended learning environments, enhancing engagement and accessibility for students. Padlet and Canvas LMS remain invaluable tools for fostering active learning and building a cohesive classroom environment. The Hub is dedicated to providing timely assistance and consultations to help instructors maximize their utilization of these capabilities.

To assist instructors in transitioning from Flip to Padlet and Canvas LMS, I created a document with insights about how to integrate these tools effectively, outlining a comprehensive approach and other suggestions to integrating Padlet and Canvas LMS into educational settings like asynchronous classes following the discontinuation of Flipgrid. If you have any questions and concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at  cwanga@umich.edu or schedule an appointment with me!
