UM-D Hosts Panel Oct. 28th 11am

We are so excited to once again be hosting a public event in conjunction with our virtual residency with Jesse Stommel.

In this event Jesse will host a panel conversation around Critical Digital Pedagogy with some amazing panelists (outlined below) followed by a short Q and A. The panel will take place virtually on October 28th at 11am ET.

What is Critical Digital Pedagogy?

Sean Michael Morris, writes of critical digital pedagogy as a kind of teaching “that would ask questions about technology, about the assumptions we make about technology—its includedness in education, its politics, its economics and labor, and its repercussions for privacy and surveillance—and not simply about the use of technology.”

Who are the panelists?

Ruha Benjamin, Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, Founding Director of the Ida B. Wells Just Data Lab, and author of the award-winning book Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code among many other publications.

Sean Michael Morris, Senior Instructor of Learning Design and Technology in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado Denver. He is also the Director of Digital Pedagogy Lab, an international professional development gathering for educators committed to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, critical digital pedagogy, and imagining a new future for education.

Martha Burtis, Associate Director and Learning Developer at the Open CoLab at Plymouth State University. She was the founding director of the Digital Knowledge Center, a peer tutoring organization for students working on digital projects at University of Mary Washington. She has taught classes in computer science, American studies, digital studies, and interdisciplinary studies. She also helped to originate the open digital storytelling community DS106.
