Hub Affiliate Offers: Presentation Help and Case-Based Instruction Discussion

Whew, you’ve (almost) made it! This semester has been tough. It definitely was not a return to normal. While we struggled last year, this year we are still pandemic-teaching but service obligations have returned while many of you are also trying to kickstart research projects that might have been on hold. So if you are exhausted, the feeling is not unfounded. In the Hub, we see how hard you’ve been working and appreciate all you have done for UM-Dearborn students.

Need Help with End-of-semester Presentations?

If you aren’t already subscribed to the Hub blog, you missed a generous offer. Hub Affiliate and Professor of Communication, Troy Murphy offered to work with faculty to create resources and rubrics for your public speaking assignments. Go to the blog to check out the samples that he created for Pat Smith’s Policy Pitch Competition. He is also offering to work with students for current end-of-semester presentations and asks that you email him (tamurphy@umich.edu) so that he could set up open office hours for your students. The Hub Affiliate program is designed to create connections between faculty and highlight the expertise that we have on our campus so check out some of the other faculty posts on the blog and see the next box in this newsletter for another Affiliate-led initiative.

Case-Based Instruction Discussion, January 6th

Katie La Commare and Sarah Silverman are honored to invite you to an informal discussion on how Katie used case-based instruction in Biology 130 this fall.

As part of her role as a Hub Affiliate, Katie transformed her biology 130 course to be structured around case-based learning. In this 1-hour  informal discussion, Katie will share the good, bad and the ugly of the transformation as well as assessment results and student reactions. Katie will also share how she intends to continue to use case-based instruction with modifications from this semester and discuss continued work with aligning assessment to case-based instruction. We are looking forward to attendees sharing their experiences with case and problem-based instruction in introductory courses.
